Feed / Livestock
The Northern Pulse Growers Association has been working diligently on the development of a feed market for pulse crops. Following are materials developed for the livestock industry on the value of feeding pulse crops.

Dr. Vern Anderson, Animal Scientist
Dr. Vern Anderson

Dr. Vern Anderson is the research Animal Scientist at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center where he has been doing nutrition and management studies with beef cows and feedlot animals for over 32 years. Dr. Anderson has researched a wide variety of feed ingredients, focusing on feeds grown in North Dakota and the processing co-products produced here. The Carrington REC faculty team develops and leads research projects that includes Animal Science Dept. faculty and graduate students and agronomic researchers to develop crop-livestock production systems that will provide grain, protein, and forages to ruminant animals. Dr. Anderson has traveled throughout the North American Continent, and to Asia, and Europe advising and lecturing on his feeds research and beef production practices. He has published numerous research papers and is a member of the American Society of Animal Sciences and the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. His academic training was initiated at South Dakota State University with his Ph.D. earned at North Dakota State University in 2000.

Field Peas Make Excellent Quality Forage
Field Peas Make Excellent Quality Forage for Beef Cattle

We know that field peas are a highly palatable grain for all classes of livestock and are a nutrient dense energy and protein source. Less well known is the nutritional value and p alatability of field peas harvested as forage. Field peas or thepopular field pea-cereal grain mixes cann be harvested as hay or silage early enough in the cropping year to potentially allow for a second later season crop.

Field Peas as Feed for Livestock

An incredible new feed grain has recently been recognized for it's potential contribution to the livestock industry. Field pea (Pisum sativum) is an annual cool-season grain legume grown predominantly in the Northern Plains with significant potential as a feed for livestock. North Dakota and Montana lead the nation in field pea prodcution. Field peas that do not make the quality specifications for human food have significant market potential as a livestock feed. Field peas and pea-cereal grain mixtures can be grown for forage (hay and silage) and pea residue after grain harvest can be fed to ruminant animals.
