USDA Announces $86 Million in Purchases of U.S.-Grown Pulses
New federal purchases aim to strengthen domestic markets while providing nutritious foods to American families.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced October 29 plans to purchase $86 million in U.S.-grown pulse crops for distribution through domestic food banks and nutrition assistance programs.
The planned purchases, part of a larger $472.5 million USDA commodity procurement announcement, include:
$37 million in split peas
$29 million in lentils
$20 million in chickpeas
The purchases will be made through USDA's Section 32 program, which supports domestic agricultural markets while helping provide nutritious foods to families in need.
For U.S. pulse growers, the announcement represents an important opportunity to expand domestic demand and strengthen market opportunities during a challenging period for agricultural producers.
Increased federal procurement of U.S.-grown pulses has long been a priority for the pulse industry. Northern Pulse Growers Association (NPGA) is proud to join growers and industry partners, including USA Pulses, in advocating for policies and programs that strengthen domestic markets, support producer profitability, and increase access to nutritious, U.S.-grown foods.
USDA is expected to release purchasing solicitations and additional details in the coming weeks. NPGA will continue monitoring developments and sharing relevant updates with growers and industry partners.
